Knowing how to recognize the warning signs of suicide and start a difficult conversation could help save a life. Manning Regional Healthcare Center (MRHC) will host a free Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) training for suicide prevention on Monday, September 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Senior Life Solutions Conference Room at MRHC.
Just as CPR prepares people to respond to physical emergencies, QPR prepares individuals to respond to a suicide crisis. Participants learn how to recognize warning signs and talk with someone who may be struggling. The training gives people practical tools to start difficult conversations and connect individuals with appropriate support and resources.
“Our communities identified suicide prevention, awareness, and education for people of all ages as a priority need,” said Senior Life Solutions Therapist Maribeth Christensen, BSW, MA, MSW, LMSW, CADC. “We are responding by expanding local knowledge, strengthening resource connections, and increasing the capacity to recognize and respond when someone may be at risk.”
Led by Christensen and Recovery Center Counselor Liz Stacey, the training is designed for anyone who wants to feel more prepared to support someone who may be struggling. No previous mental health training or experience is needed.
The training is open to individuals 16 and older and is free to attend. A meal and giveaways will be provided. Registration is required, and space is limited to 12 participants. To learn more and register for the training, visit mrhcia.com/event/qpr-training.
