Senior Life Solutions Program Receives 4 Laptop Computers for Group Therapy Thanks to Generous Donors

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the Senior Life Solutions team at Manning Regional Healthcare Center immediately started identifying ways that they could continue to meet with the community’s most vulnerable audience, seniors ages 65+ who were living alone and could no longer meet face-to-face.

“We knew that our patients were already struggling with depression, anxiety and loneliness,” said Janet Brus, RN, Program Director for Senior Life Solutions. “The added stress, anxiety, and uncertainty of what this pandemic could do to not only our seniors, but everyone in our community was scary for many.”

Therefore, Brus and her team knew that they needed to act quickly to be able to keep meeting with and serving the needs of these patients. Through daily meetings, it was identified that there was a great need for these patients to have computers so they could meet virtually with their therapists. Community members became aware of the need and stepped up to help.

With their support, the Senior Life Solutions team was able to secure four laptops for patients to use and provide the education and training they needed to start using them right away.

“Our Knights charter believes in supporting the needs of our community members. When we first learned of this need, we realized that without being able to have Mass, without a grocery store in town, and without the ability to get out and about in the community, there were likely many seniors, including our parishioners, who could benefit from this program and investment of technology to support them,” said Grand Knight, Wes Dammann. “We are grateful to everyone who supports our fundraisers throughout the year, so it’s our privilege to be able to give back to the communities we represent.”

Senior Life Solutions will now be able to continue to offer group sessions virtually through telehealth as well as one-on-one consultations as needed.

“We don’t know how long the pandemic will last, but we do know that our senior population will continue to be the most vulnerable,” said Brus. “This investment in technology will allow us to continue meeting with these patients a long time into the future and help them through this difficult time of isolation.”

“This makes me feel better to be able to see my people that I care about and am concerned about. I pray for them every day because they are part of me. This (using a device) makes it much easier,” a group therapy participant said.

Manning Regional Healthcare Center’s Senior Life Solutions is an intensive outpatient group therapy program designed to meet the unique needs of senior adults struggling with symptoms of depression and anxiety that can sometimes be age-related. Manning’s program staff includes Amy Hull, therapist, Cathy Dammann, office and patient coordinator, and Janet Brus, program director.
