David Denman, M.D., FACS

Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT)

Dr. David Denman, M.D., FACS, began providing ENT services at MRHC in 2020 and is board certified in Otolaryngology & Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Denman is in Manning on the first and third Wednesday of every month offering adult and pediatric ENT services that address problems occurring within the ear, nose, and throat.

Dr. Denman graduated with Distinction from the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Following college, he attended the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, receiving a Master of Physical Therapy and M.D., graduating with High Distinction from both programs. He earned Regent Scholarships for both the College of Allied Health and College of Medicine and was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed his residency in Otolaryngology and served as Chief Resident at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

His professional memberships include the following: Diplomate American Academy of Otolaryngology & Head and Neck Surgery, Fellow American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy, Inc., American College of Surgeons, American Rhinologic Society, and Metro Omaha Medical Society.

When not practicing medicine, he likes to spend time with his family. He is an avid runner and has competed in numerous marathons including the Boston Marathons and Ultra Marathon.

Andrew Bourne, M.D., FACS

Urology

Dr. Bourne, M.D., FACS, diagnoses and treats diseases of the urinary tract in men, women, and pediatric patients. He can also diagnose and treat issues involving the reproductive tract in men. He offers urology services every other Friday in Manning. Dr. Bourne is a board-certified surgeon who has passed a thorough evaluation of both professional competence and ethical fitness to be named a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).

Dr. Bourne grew up in Sioux City and attended The University of Tulsa, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He completed his medical degree at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa and finished his internship and residency at Southern Illinois University in Springfield, Illinois.

Recovery Center

Taya Vonnahme, MSN, RN, ARNP, CADC, serves as the Director of the Recovery Center at Manning Regional Healthcare Center. Taya is a Manning local and has worked in various nursing areas throughout her career at MRHC, including the Recovery Center. She transitioned from her nursing role at MRHC in January of 2021 to accept this position.

With Taya’s background in nursing and the medical side of addiction and health she is able to apply her medical background combined with addiction studies and bring a new aspect of leadership to MRHC, something that sets the Recovery Center apart from others. Her goal is to continue to grow inpatient services as well as increase awareness of outpatient services.

Speech Therapy

Carrie Scharfenkamp, M.A. CCC-SLP, offers speech therapy services at MRHC on an as-needed basis. Speech therapy services include evaluation and treatment in the areas of speech, language, swallowing, voice, cognition, and augmentative communication. Scharfenkamp can address issues with speaking, reading, listening, writing, thinking, and swallowing. While she has a pediatric background, Scharfenkamp provides services for all age groups from birth to geriatrics.

Common deficit areas Scharfenkamp works with are apraxia, aphasia, articulation, augmentative communication, dysarthria, expressive/receptive language disorders, oral motor disorders, fluency, swallowing, voice disorders, and pragmatic disorders. She also works with a wide range of diagnoses such as MS, dementia, autism, developmental delays, stroke, Parkinson’s, cancer, ALS, TBI, cerebral palsy, speech/language delay, and more.

Scharfenkamp grew up in the Carroll area and received an associate degree from DMACC in Liberal Arts and bachelor’s degree in Linguistics from Iowa State University. She attended the University of South Dakota for her Master of Arts in speech-language pathology while completing clinical work in various settings for clients including an elementary school, Scottish Rite Children’s Clinic, SESDAC, and University Clinic. After graduating college, she began working at Northwest Area Education Agency as a speech-language pathologist where she currently works with children from birth to five years old.

Amy Osbahr, OTR/L joined MRHC as an Occupational Therapist in November of 2023. She has experience treating a wide range of diagnoses for individuals of all ages. Amy offers occupational therapy services for adults who have difficulties with routine care such as brushing their teeth, getting dressed, feeding themselves breakfast, or driving to work. Geriatric services are available as well. She works to get elderly people stronger and back home to be able to live independently.

She also provides pediatric care which consists of ensuring that children are meeting developmental milestones and progressing as they should. Amy has over 10 years of experience treating children across the age spectrum for many different conditions resulting in developmental delay such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, cerebral palsy, Down’s Syndrome, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, as well as sensory issues and head injuries. Some of the difficulties that Amy can address include: 

  • Sensory processing disorder – the inability to respond appropriately to sensory experiences due to our nervous system inaccurately processing sensory information
  • Fine motor skill difficulties (Clumsiness for a child’s given age, inability to grasp objects by 11 months of age, etc., self-care skills, difficulty holding, grooming, eating, and handling utensils; problems with dressing; and difficulty following simple directions.)

Taylor Nelson, PT, DPT

Physical Therapy

Taylor Nelson, PT, DPT, began as the Physical Therapist and Therapy Director at MRHC in September 2021. Nelson is a Vestibular Rehabilitation Specialist, which uses an exercise-based program to improve balance and reduce dizziness-related problems. He also specializes in orthopedic type conditions, implementing a multifaceted approach, including hands on and exercise-based treatments to help patients achieve their therapy goals.

Nelson is dedicated to bringing the hospital to a new level with PT services and having a place for everyone to receive high-quality, evidence-based care. Evidence-based practice includes the integration of best available evidence, clinical expertise, and patient values and circumstances related to patient and client management, practice management, and health policy decision-making, according to the American Physical Therapy Association.

After graduating from Central College in 2015 with a degree in Health and Exercise Science, Nelson obtained his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the University of New England in 2019. He then worked as a physical therapist at Proactive Physical Therapy in Lewiston, Maine for two years. Nelson and his wife, originally from Exira, then made their transition back to the area.

Amber Croghan, the MRHC Health Coach, ensures that patients are identified and receive preventive care and wellness. This includes Medicare age patients who need an annual wellness visit, preventive care screenings, and a provider visit to ensure seniors are staying well. During the annual wellness visit, problems can be identified and treated before they become complex and require hospitalization. Staying well is the goal.

Amber and the health coach assistant/clinic scheduler work closely to ensure annual wellness visits are scheduled and completed. Transition care management visits or TCM visits are also scheduled by the Health Coach/Health Coach Assistant to ensure patients are recovering and their needs are met after a hospitalization.

Sara Powers, ARNP, joined the Family Practice Clinic in March 2022 with the intention to offer more same-day appointments. Sara serves as a dedicated provider focused on seeing sick patients.

Dr. Luong, M.D., joined MRHC in September 2018 and is board certified in family medicine. He graduated from the University of California Riverside with a degree in Biochemistry. Dr. Luong is a graduate of Des Moines University medical school. He completed his 36-month residency at Genesis Quad Cities Family Medicine in Davenport, Iowa where he was the chief resident.

Originally from California, Dr. Luong came to Iowa for medical school and chose to stay in Iowa to practice a full spectrum of family medicine. Dr. Luong is eager to get to know new patients and continue to see familiar faces in the Clinic. He enjoys practicing in the Emergency Department, Nursing Home, and Wound Care clinic as well, which is what made the Family Practice Clinic at MRHC clinic such a great fit for him.
